TUSKEGEE AIRMEN

COLONEL MILTON WHITE VISITS BVEOS

Last Wednesday, the fourth grade was privileged to hear a presentation by a Tuskegee Airman, Colonel Milton White and his charming wife Ann.

The Whites discussed the terrible world situation which existed in 1941 and the grand contribution that the Tuskegee Airmen made to the winning of World War Two. Mrs. White discussed the political background and the deadly policies of the NAZI government of Germany. She talked about the various groups who were threatened by the NAZI party. Then she talked about the volunteer pilots and ground crewmen who trained at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. All were young Black men and all performed extremely well. COL White talked about their combat record in the air. Sixty-six were lost in training and combat crashes. However, during the entire war, not a single United States bomber was lost while being escorted by the Tuskegee Airmen. They flew airplanes which had the tail painted red just like the one in our library. They were called the “Red-Tailed Angels” by the Americans and the “Red-Tailed Devils” by the NAZI’s. The Tuskegee Airmen were a brave and integral part of the success in the Italian campaign during WWII.

We thank the Whites for their fine presentation and invite them back for another.

SMART Circus at Buena Vista By Melissa Meadows, Music Specialist

On the morning of May 6, the kindergarten classes performed the SMART Circus for family and friends. The performance highlighted many skills from Stimulating Maturity through Accelerated Readiness Training (SMART), a program used with all of Buena Vista’s kindergarten students.

The circus acts included: lovely young ladies on galloping horses and their trainer, tightrope walkers, clowns, the bear family, the animals and their trainer, the strongmen and their lovely assistant, the flight of the human cannonball, the tumblers and of course, the ringmasters. The circus performers (kindergartners) did an amazing job.

The circus returned for an encore performance on Friday afternoon, as they presented the program for Buena Vista students. Bravo, Kindergartners! May all your days be circus days!

MUFFINS FOR MOM, DOUGHNUTS FOR DAD

On May 6, Title I sponsored "Muffins for Mom". We had muffins, coffee, and juice for Moms to enjoy with their children. We had sixty-two moms and grandmothers in attendance.

On June 17, Title I will sponsor "Doughnuts for Dad". All dads and grandfathers are invited to join us for doughnuts, coffee, and juice.

Fourth Grade Patriotic Program - A Wonderful Success

The fourth grade classes presented We Are America, Thursday, May 19. They did an outstanding job. The program started with the reciting of the preamble of our nation’s constitution. They also performed America (made famous by Neil Diamond), Roots (a song about the different cultures in America), A Patriotic Salute (a medley of Yankee Doodle and You’re a Grand Old Flag) complete with flags, stars, and confetti, and Dr. Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ Speech. Jessica Smith and Jaya Turner were featured in the applause getter, Light the Candles, the program ended with Heart of America. In the spirit of the day the fourth graders perform This Little Light of Mine as an encore. The students looked wonderful in their new red and blue T-shirts that were provided by the BVEOS P.T.O. The day was a fabulous success.

Educating Children: The Most Important Thing Our Community Does

Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools has proposed an operating budget of $570 million for the 2005-2006 academic year. This budget includes much needed dollars to meet the Federal and State requirements of No Child Left Behind to help students achieve academic success. Please call and contact Metro Council members to encourage them to vote for the tax increase.

WE ARE THE DREAM

The legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. was performed by the third grade classes at Buena Vista Enhanced Option School on Friday, May 20th. The year was 1968. In a classroom in the rural South, children prepared for a visit from civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. Little did they know that by week’s end the heroic figure they had so admired would be gone forever. It was one of the better executed and most entertaining class programs ever performed at BVEOS.

SCHOOL UNIFORMS ARE ALWAYS APPROPRIATE

Students will continue to wear uniforms during the summer session. Blue jeans have been added to the uniform policy, BUT THEY cannot be sagging and bagging. They cannot be two sizes too big, they cannot have big pockets, or writing all over them. Students are allowed to wear shorts that are as long as their finger tips. Tank tops or short tops that show the stomach are NOT allowed. Tops that hang off of the shoulders are NOT allowed. I would like to see all of our students in their learning clothes Monday through Thursday. — Principal
