The Pearl-Cohn cluster faces unique challenges with student assignment. Over the years, this cluster has been shrinking geographically, as well as in enrollment numbers. Many of the schools in the Pearl-Cohn cluster are choice schools or specialty schools, and several are severely underutilized. This area is densely populated and economically underprivileged. For these reasons, all schools in the Pearl-Cohn cluster will receive additional resources.

Additionally, all students previously zoned to a noncontiguous (geographically separated)school will have the choice to attend a school in a noncontiguous zone rather than the newly assigned school. Transportation for all who choose to attend a noncontiguous school will be provided by the district. Students currently assigned to the Hillwood Cluster who are being reassigned to Buena Vista for the 2009-2010 school year will have a zoned choice option to Harpeth Valley with transportation. Students currently zoned to the Hillwood Cluster who are being reassigned to Wharton Elementary will have a zoned choice option to attend Gower Elementary with transportation. Students currently assigned to Hillwood Cluster who are being reassigned to John Early will have a zoned choice option to attend either H.G. Hill or Bellevue Middle, depending on their legal address, with transportation. Students currently assigned to Hillwood High who have been reassigned to Pearl-Cohn High, have a zoned choice to attend Hillwood with transportation.

To best accommodate the students and families living in the Pearl-Cohn cluster and to best utilize building space, the district also decided to change grade configurations at select schools. Buena Vista, Cockrill, and Park Avenue elementary schools will offer grades Pre-K – 5. Wharton (located at the Brookmeade facility next year only) - K-4 2009-2010, but PK-5 beginning in 2010-11. John Early and W.A. Bass middle schools will offer grades 6 – 8. McKissack Academy will offer 9th grade only, and Pearl-Cohn High will offer grades 10 – 12. School specific changes include:

  • John Early Middle School becomes a pathway to Hume-Fogg Magnet High School for students who qualify.
