Exemplars Math Solving

Our school participates in Math Exemplars every Tuesday and Thursday during our extended day from 2:45-3:30. Each grade level is practicing on a word problem chosen by the math committee. Our Kindergarten team participates with an adapted form of exemplars due to the usual extensiveness of the problems.

Exemplars math performance tasks can be used for assessment, instruction and professional development.

Math Exemplars gives both teachers and administrators a way of assessing students' problem-solving and communication skills and provides classroom-tested, real-world problems for instruction. It can be integrated into your existing curriculum to facilitate both assessment and instruction.

Exemplars rubrics define what student work meets today's standards. Our annotated anchor papers identify distinctions to look for when assessing student performance and promote student self- and peer-assessment. Task-specific samples of student work are included for each of the four performance levels of the Exemplars rubric: Novice, Apprentice, Practitioner and Expert.

The most powerful form of professional development occurs when teachers work together to assess student performance and discuss student work. This experience ties together assessment, curriculum and instruction. Exemplars material supports this process.
